It’s spring cleanup time and our area certainly needs it. Recent rains have spurred the growth of weeds and high grass, leaving a generally overgrown look in some areas both in and outside the city of New Albany.
That combined with old cars, abandoned appliances and lots of other trash items remind us that our community only looks as good as we want it to. Which brings us to the Great American Cleanup.
The Keep New Albany/Union County Beautiful group again is sponsoring a city and countywide cleanup effort from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May. 4. To participate, call Vickie Duke of the New Albany Main Street Association at 662-534-3438 or Joanne Lesley of the Union County Development Association at 662-534-4354.
You can select a neighborhood, park, street or any other site to clean up or beautify in some way. Registered groups will receive complimentary trash bags for litter. Recycling containers also will be available for everything from paper products to household appliances in the city parking lot next to the Union County Library.
We encourage you to participate in this organized effort, but also remind you that cleaning up and keeping up property in our community is not a one Saturday thing. There’s no reason to wait until May 4 to get started or to put it out of mind after May 4.
Improving the look of our community is a year-round effort. And it takes everyone to make it happen.
