Hurricane News, August 29, 2012
Anchoring the community in the northwest corner of Pontotoc County and the Union County line is Union Nazarene Church as the congregation held their annual homecoming on Sunday, August 26. Welcoming the guests and members to the service was their pastor Donnie Carpenter. Those from out of the community that attended the event are as follows: Berl Russell, Memphis;Barney, Susanne,Karlie and Clay Russell Wade, Calhoun City; Bartlee and Glenna Mitchell, Bartlett, Tennessee; James and Charissa Carepnter Pardee and children of Belden; Quinn Quillian of Pleasant Dale; and Jonathan Nabors, Shaun Nabors, and the Nabors Family of Nashville were the guest singers. They are the descendants of the late Oscar Nabors, a former pastor at Old Union. Ricky and Barbara Lucius Box of Houston as Barbara's dad was a former pastor there also. This homecoming day has been observed since 1938.
The family of the late Authur and May Benjamin Ross enjoyed a reunion at the Hurricane Community Center on August 18. Bro. Winston Ross(83)is the eldest in the family, and the younger generation was represented by Easton White who is seven months old and by Knox Poe also a baby. Ten of the twelve grandchildren attended and are as follows: June Ezell(Jack), Buddy Ross Montgomery (Betty), Brenda Barton(Charles), Dicky Ross(Doris), Tim Ross(Marilyn), Thad Ross(Barb), Chres Ross(Beverly), Scotty Ross, Missy Russell(Chris), and Glen Ross(Lisa). Their family history is interesting as there is a period of time that their family resided in Indian Territory in Oklahoma as well as West Texas before returning to Esperanza, Mississippi(the old name for Hurricane).
Clarenda Parrish of Sand Springs hosted a luncheon at her home on August 18. Those from out of state that attended with members of the Brandon and Montgomery families were as follows: Betty Swords Pierce of Cleveland, Ohio, and Floyce Long, Sandy Williams, Floyce Long, and Leatrice Langston of Memphis. The group went to Smoke Top to visit with Trudie Thompson(Curt) and their daughters, Elizabeth and Emme, at their new home.
Dillon Turner is a freshman at ICC and is on the football team. Proud grandfather from our community in Bro. Winston Ross.
Linda Weeden and her daughters, Amy May and Ginger Long, enjoyed a vacation at Ft. Morgan Beach. Also on the trip were her grandchildren, Lexi and Gabe May, and Mirandin and Adam Dillard. Great-grandchildren being spoiled at the beach were Malaydyn and Trystyn.
Ella Kate Hooker celebrated her fifith birthday on Aug. 20 with an owl cake and a swim party.
Seth Sutton is teaching at West Union Attendance Center as this is his first year. Seth is the grandson of Bro. Ronnie and Sue Sutton, former residents of Hurricane.
Betty Hill Grisham of Shady Grove just celebrated one of those decade beginning birthdays according to her older sister. Oh! no. the 6-0.
Lexi May enjoyed an exciting 11th birthday party at her parents' home in Friendship on Aug. 25.. Amy and Rodney May decorated for a tiki beach party with a water slide, games, and cotton candy.
Betty Pierce of Cleveland, Ohio, enjoyed a visit at Little Kettle Creek Camp at Lafayette Springs with Susan Hooker.
Marrietta Gafford of Etta and Seth Ferrell of Madison attended the morning service at Hurricane Baptist on Aug. 26 with Charlie Hicks.
Shelia Owen and Cheryl Sullivan of Ecru enjoyed lunch in Memphis on Monday, August 27, and were treated by their cousin Paul B. McCarver. Always a topic for discussion for this family in August is that the Memphis Funeral Home, where Paul B. is a director, was in charge of the arrangements for Elvis Presley's funeral thirty-five years ago.
A belated expression of sympathy is extended to the family of Irene Williams of Etta who was the widow of James Williams and the mother of Joyce Waldron(Randle) of Hurricane.
A belated expression of sympathy is extended to the family of E.E. “Jack” Williams(96) who was preceded in death by his wife Sally Blagg Williams. Mr. Jack was an employee of the second district supervisor for most of my youth and pleasantly recall a ride on the road grader from my grandparents' old home on Esperanza Road to downtown Hurricane. His family had hosted big,
birthday bashes that he enjoyed each year in January at the community center.
Sympathy is extended to the family of Kevin Pardee who was the husband of Barbara Pardee of the Cane Creek neighborhood. He will be missed by his friends and sons, Kevin and James, and their families..
