The Northeast Mississippi Lady Tigers AAU team finished their 2011 season in the Nike Battle at the Boro tournament, held at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn. In their five games, the Lady Tigers finished with a 4-1 record, falling only to the Triple D Hoops out of Dallas, Texas in their second game of the weekend.
The Lady Tigers opened the tournament with a 12 point win over the Blue Star Maryland South squad, 56-44, led in scoring by Aspriona Gilbert with 20 points, Jazmine Spears with 15 and Halle Knowles 8 points.
Gilbert again led the Lady Tigers in their loss to Triple D Hoops, scoring 24 points in the 57-47 loss. Christi Clark of New Site added 10 points.
Spears and Gilbert helped Northeast rebound in their third game against Texas Shockers, 66-63. Gilbert led with 26 points followed by Spears with 24.
In their biggest win of the tournament, the Lady Tigers defeated the Tennessee Dream, 60-26, led by Oak Hill Academy’s Tori Ellis’ 17 points. Gilbert followed with 12 points, as it was her only game to not lead the Lady Tigers in scoring. Northeast also held the Dream to only 11 second half points after leading 26-15 at the half. The Lady Tigers closed the tournament with a 52-40 win over the FBC Elite squad out of Missouri. Gilbert again led the team with 19 points.
In their final game, the Lady Tigers played in front of 24 Division I scouts, and so far several players have received offers to play collegiately. The Lady Tigers finished the 2011 summer season at 26-7 and are coached by Nathan Holdum.
Union County players included Gilbert, Spears, Knowles and Meshay Cox.
