A week after the high school champions were crowned in the UCT, the junior high squads took center stage with West Union girls and New Albany boys taking home the championship trophies.
In the girls game, the Lady Eagles topped number one seed New Albany 41-36, winning their second straight UCT title.
West Union led 10-8 heading into the second before Rometta Lombard and the Lady Bulldogs took control in the second. Lombard scored seven in the frame, as New Albany led 21-19 at the half.
The Lady Bulldogs remained the in the lead despite six lead changes in the third quarter.
Led by Brittany Taylor in the fourth, West Union took the lead, 37-36, as Taylor led the Lady Eagles with eight fourth quarter points. Julianna Garner sealed the title win for West Union with free throws at the end of the game.
Taylor was the leading scorer for West Union with 18 points, while Lombard finished with 19 for New Albany.
The boys game was the same match-up as the high school UCT championship, but this time with New Albany topping the Falcons, 55-24.
Von Watson led New 0 in the first quarter, scoring 11 as the Bulldogs jumped ahead for the 17-6 lead.
New Albany’s defense held the Falcons to only six first half points, and Ingomar did not score in double digits in any quarter in the contest.
Watson finished with 22 points for the Bulldogs in the championship.
