Maxine Mroz Hunter, Union County native now living in Bartlett, Tenn., has recently published a book of human interest columns that she wrote from 1987 through 2002 for the New Albany Gazette. She will be featured at the next Museum Moments on Thursday, Aug. 21, at noon at the museum.
The book, entitled Life Lessons from Home, Union County 1987-2002, was published in July. It contains columns featuring New Albany and Union County people and events.
Many local people are featured in the books, she said.
Hunter was employed as Family Living editor for the Gazette for 10 years, and after her retirement in 1996, she continued to write weekly columns for the newspaper for another six years. The New Albany Gazette is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.
In the Forward to the book, Hunter writes: “Over the years some of you have kindly asked why I did not put my columns in book form, and considering how quickly the world is changing it now seems that to preserve something of the events and issues of that time would be a good thing.
“While the columns are not a complete history of events of that era when New Albany and Union County were undergoing some momentous changes, they do chronicle some of these events: the city’s sesquicentennial in 1990, the establishment of the Park Along the River, the beginning and growth of the Union County Literacy Society and the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity and the birth of the Union County Historical Society and its museum. Along the way the columns noted events of day-to-day life among its people and the smaller victories and losses that together make up the grand total of our past.”
Hunter, born Maxine Langford in Union County, was a 1952 graduate of New Albany High School and attended Blue Mountain College. Before writing for the Gazette, she worked for many years at the Union County Library. After moving to Tennessee, she worked for two others newspapers, the Bartlett Express and The Germantown News, before retiring in 2011.
