The dust still has not settled concerning the Republican senate primary and run-off but Union County is about to see another race state – this one likely much less dramatic.
On the Nov. 5 general election ballot will be the District Five seat on the Union County School Board of Trustees.
Wayne Mahon is the currently serving Fifth District school trustee.
The qualifying period for that office is different from most county and state offices: Wednesday, Aug. 6, through 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5.
In order to run for and be elected as county school trustee, a candidate must be a bona fide resident and qualified elector in the school district for which he is running.
Lines were redrawn several years ago to reflect population changes so the county school district lines are not the same and county supervisors’ district lines. The county superintendent’s office should be able to help in determining which county school district someone lives in.
Only registered voters in that school district can take part in the election.
A candidate must also have a high school diploma. Upon election, he or she must complete a basic course of training and education, and file an annual completion of course of continuing education.
County school trustees receive no salary as such but are allotted $67 per day for no more than 36 meetings per fiscal year. Alternately, the trustee can choose to receive an annual fixed amount of $2,400, but whichever method he or she chooses must be kept for all four years of the term. A county school trustee receives no state insurance, retirement or other benefits.
Also, a trustee’s spouse cannot be employed with the school district and he or she cannot do business with the district.
Anyone who wants to run for the trustee’s position need to submit a statement of intent and petition signed by not less than 50 qualified electors in that school district (or at least 20 percent of the district’s qualified electors if the district has fewer than 100 total). The petition will need to be filed with the county election commission and circuit clerk’s office, where the petition signatures must be certified.
Candidates must also file a statement of economic interest with the Mississippi Ethics Commission within 15 days of filing, and other required campaign finance disclosure reports later at the circuit clerk’s office.
