A fourth inning surge gave the Desoto Xplorers the edge on Saturday, as they defeated the Bay Springs Bobcats 10-5 in Cotton States High School League play.
Colton Peel (Ripley) led for the Xplorers with two RBIs off a double in the fourth inning, after leading off the game with a single.
Hayes McMullen (Houston), Kyle Coombs (Ripley), John Oliver (Tupelo) and Mason McBride (Ripley) all turned in RBI singles for the Xplorers during the game, while McBride pitched a six full innings with the win.
Austin Graham (West Union) took the loss on the mound for the Bobcats, who pulled within one run after the Xplorers took a 3-1 lead. The run came from a single by Coley Tabb (Eupora) that brought Ross Shackleford (Ripley) across home plate.
The Xplorers five-run fifth inning put the game out of reach for the Bobcats at an 8-2 score, with three runs unearned from errors, walks, or struck batters by the Bobcats pitching rotation.
Kyle Olson (New Albany) began the sixth inning in the same vein for the Xplorers, taking base on a hit to the arm. Olson ended his trip around the bases on a fielders choice out at second, but the Desoto squad added two more runs, both unearned, in the final full inning.
