Cornersville-Blythe news

By Martha Hardy

Hopefully the nice rain we got over the weekend will help those who are planting a garden and the farmers’ crops. I am sure that everyone is enjoying these cool days knowing the heat is a-coming soon.

The Union County Master Gardeners held the second Annual Plant sale in the lot between Fred Dollar store and the Tallahatchie River on Saturday, May 17.There was a great assortment and wide variety of plants for sale. This was my first time to go to the sale and I would have enjoyed spending time with my friends there. However, the rain was coming down and I had not dressed warmly enough, so I was unable to stay for very long.

But I spoke with Lisa James, our co-president, along with her husband, Pat. They tell me that we did have a fair turnout in spite of the bad weather.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about our friend and neighbor Cary Whitten having been diagnosed with a facial Melanoma. I have some good news about Cary. One day last week I was at the country home of our son Chuck and Sally, as they were in the process of planting some things in yard. Cary was passing by and stopped to visit with us. He has had extensive surgery on his face that required 75 stiches.

When we spoke on the phone and he told me this, I feared that it would be disfigured, but that is not the case at all. He is looking very well. He is very pleased with the doctors at Vanderbilt who did the surgery. It was good to visit with him and to see such a good attitude that he has about it.

For the past two weeks we have had some company here at my house. Our son Chuck, his wife Sally and their sweet little daughter Vada have been here with us. We have been enjoying them so much and Vada is so quiet we hardly know she is around. Her grandma is enjoying holding and rocking her to sleep, but hopefully it is not spoiling her too badly. She has been smiling at us so sweetly. She has an appointment with her doctor in Memphis, Tenn. Monday for a check up, so they decided to drive back to Memphis yesterday and spend the night there, as Chuck is going to have to take care of some other business while he is in town. It is just too quiet here this morning, but they will be returning this afternoon.

This is all the news I have at this time, but I would like to leave you with these thoughts coming from Bill Gates. They are very appropriate and might be helpful for our graduating classes. He said the world will expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself. He also said life is not fair, so get used to it. And if you think your teacher is tough, wait until you get a boss. Also be nice to nerds – chances are you will be working for one. And if you mess up, it is not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
