Blake Spruill scored several different ways on Friday night to help lead his East Union teammates to a 29-14 win over Potts Camp. Spruill had an unofficial total of 102 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns, kicked three PAT’s and recorded a safety as he tackled the Cardinals quarterback Hunter Joyner in the end zone.

East Union went for the block on the first punt of the game and it worked to perfection as the ball was recovered at the Potts Camp four yard line. It took only two plays for the Urchins to reach the end zone as quarterback D.J. Armstrong called his own number and sneaked in from the one. Blake Spruill added the PAT and East Union led 7-0 with 8:12 left in the first quarter.

Potts Camp and East Union then exchanged punts on the next two series. After East Union’s 39 yard punt to the Potts Camp 24 appeared to have the Cardinals pinned deep in their own territory, the Cardinals needed only one play to cover 76 yards and score. East Union appeared to have Taylor Jeffries tackled for a loss, but the elusive Jeffries shook off a would-be tackler, reversed the field and ran across the the backfield and turned up the field and turned on the speed and outraced the Urchins to the end zone. The run for the two point conversion was unsuccessful and the score was 7-6 with 1:55 left in the first quarter.

East Union twice drove inside the Cardinal 20-yard line but came away empty-handed each time. Each time a turnover stopped the drives, the first a fumble and the second was an interception at the Cardinal four.

However the poor field position after the interception led to the next Urchin score as Blake Spruill tackled Cardinal quarterback Hunter Joyner in the end zone for a safety with 6:18 left in the half.

East Union took the free kick after the safety and drove 40 yards in 12 plays to extend their lead. Spruill scored on a seven yard scamper and kicked the PAT and the score was16-6 with :56 left in the half. The teams went into half at that score.

Potts Camp attempted an onside kick and not only failed to recover the ball, they gave the Urchins excellent field position and they took advantage of it as they marched 51 yards in six plays with Spruill scoring form four yards out. The PAT failed and the score with 9:54 left in the third quarter was 22-6.

East Union’s final score came with 4:41 left in the game as Spruill sprinted 40 yards for the touchdown and added the PAT to make the score 29-6. Potts Camp closed the scoring on a one yard run by Jeffries and the two point conversion was good as Jeffries hit Keldrick Wiseman for the two point attempt and the final score was reached 29-14.

Spruill was the leading rusher for East Union as he had unofficial totals of 102 yards with three touchdowns. He also kicked three PAT’s and recorded the safety. Chase Hall rushed for 64 yards in the game.

East Union is now 3-0 and has next week off. They will return to action on September 20 as they host Strayhorn.
