Another school year ends

Another school year has come to an end, and I don’t know about y’all, but I’m thankful for the break.
Of course I use this term loosely, as there are plenty of upcoming events that will occupy my time as it does during this time of the year.
As I normally do at this point, I want to highlight some of my favorite moments from this last school year. There were many emotional moments throughout the last nine months, including several in the final two weeks.
Beginning last fall, probably one of the best moments I’ve witnessed during my time here came on a Friday night, opening the new football season. For anyone who was on hand to witness New Albany’s season opener against Ripley, there’s no way you watched the team enter the field with Head Coach Ron Price and his daughter, Molly Addison, and didn’t become emotional.
The way the team rallied around Price after the loss of his wife during the offseason was amazing to watch, and not only on this night. Throughout the course of the season, the team overcame obstacles, including entering division play at 2-4 only to go on a five game win streak, including a victory over two-time defending state champion Lafayette, to win the school’s second division title in three years.
Keeping with football, East Union made its mark in its first year with its own program. There were highs and lows for the young team, and there’s much more to look forward to in the coming years, as they will compete in a division in 2A beginning in the fall.
Moving on to basketball, Union County did not have anyone make it to state this year, but that doesn’t mean there were not many memorable moments from the year. The one that sticks out the most involves Myrtle and their tribute to Ben Paist after his accident. The Hawks battled adversity throughout the season, and this time was no different for them, as they paid tribute to their friend and teammate who could not finish the season with them.
Moving on to the spring sports, this is the first year I’ve had to travel to Jackson for tennis, softball and baseball. We won’t discuss how many miles were put on my vehicle during that two week period, but it was a lot of fun to watch New Albany win state in tennis and watch West Union and East Union compete in the state finals. Also, Ingomar’s Molly Hale winning the individual state title in 1A girls’ golf also makes the list of best moments from this year.
This school year was, at times, stressful, but there are a lot of great memories to look back on. Now it’s time to look ahead and get excited about next year, as we watch summer league games and the Cotton States League, which starts up again this weekend.
Like always, I look forward to heading back to the ball fields and basketball courts in the coming weeks, and I’ll see everyone out there!
