This is the time of year when I usually feel guilty. It’s not that I’ve done anything really terrible. No, nothing like that.
The guilt is because it’s usually about this time when the last of the New Year’s resolutions have fallen by the wayside. Oh, I start out with good intentions, usually some noble effort to make a better me.
But I’ve found through the years that making a better me isn’t all that easy. The last several years at least one of my New Year’s resolutions has been about my weight, because it keeps creeping up.
You may remember me mentioning that several years ago my weight got up to 199 and I made a New Year’s resolution to get it down to 170. I even went out and bought a treadmill. I used it a few weeks, decided it was boring, and it has sat unused ever since.
I suppose it still runs, although I haven’t tried it. It just stands there in its folded-up position. It makes a perfect place to lay the folded bedspread when Jenny and I go to bed. If it were heated, it could pass for one of those British heated towel racks.
A year ago I had gotten my weight down to 180 before the holidays, so I decided to make what I thought were resolutions for 2012 that would be easy to keep: Don’t eat more than I want. Don’t exercise more than I want. And keep my weight under 180.
I thought the first two would be easy. I wouldn’t eat more than I want, and I didn’t plan to exercise at all. I thought the weight thing might be a little harder.
Apparently, it was.
Saturday morning when I got on the scales, I was at 191. How did that happen? I had been really good all year about not snacking between meals, and avoiding most candy, cookies and desserts.
The key may be in the resolution about not eating more than I want. I grew up in a clean- plate family and I tend to eat what is there, even in restaurants that give me portions big enough for two.
I think my wife and our son Joe get part of the blame, too. They stop eating when they have had all they want.
It’s a big problem. Take last Saturday, for instance. We had lunch in Memphis during our annual taking-back-Christmas-clothes-that-don’t-fit trip. Jenny and I both ordered fish tacos, which came with a side of black beans and rice.
Jenny ate her tacos and said she was full. I finished my lunch and then eyed her plate. I love black beans and rice. Yep, I ate hers, too. Yummy.
On Sunday I weighed 191.9. But I didn’t feel guilty. This year I didn’t make any New Year’s resolutions.
Maybe I need to make some February resolutions.
Or buy a bigger belt.
