Gazette staff receives state honors

The New Albany Gazette has been honored with nine awards in the annual Better Newspaper Contest of the Mississippi Press Association.

Competing in the medium-size non-daily newspaper group, the Gazette received a third place award for general excellence. It is the second time in the past three years the Gazette has been honored for general excellence.

In individual categories, Gazette Publisher T. Wayne Mitchell received a first place award for his editorials that appear under the “Our Opinion” column on Page 4 of the newspaper.

“Concise, reasoned editorials mark the New Albany Gazette’s editorial page,” judges wrote in their comments.

Mitchell also received a second place award for best overall editorial page. The page includes weekly columns by him and Mississippi columnist Rheta Grimsley Johnson, as well as letters to the editor and a community calendar.

Managing Editor David Johnson, received a second place award in the spot news category for his story on the slaying of Amanda Price and the wounding of her husband, Ron.

Angie Barmer was honored with three awards, one for writing and two for photography. She received a second place award for best feature story for an article about a local woman who appeared in the movie, “The Help.”

She received a third place in the best general news photo category for a photo of Patriot Day remembrance ceremonies, and another in the best feature photo category for a photo of children at a summer arts camp.

Sports Editor Elizabeth Zaremba won two third place awards. In the best game story category, she was honored for her coverage of the New Albany Lady Bulldogs state championship game. She also received a third place for best sports column for “View From the Cheap Seats.”

The results of the contest, which was judged by journalists in the West Virginia Press Association, were announced at an awards luncheon July 7 in Destin, Fla.

In addition, the Gazette has received five awards in an annual national news and advertising competition conducted by Landmark Community Newspapers.

New Albany Magazine’s inaugural issue last fall received a third place award in the best special section category.

Mitchell received two awards, a second place for excellence in column writing for his weekly column on Page 4A and a third place for excellence in editorial writing.

 Johnson received a third place award in the best front-page design category and Zaremba received a third place award in the best general page design category for her sports pages.
