Myrtle grabs division win over Ingomar

It was not the big run performance the Lady Hawks have become accustomed to this season, but they will take the division win, defeating Ingomar 3-1 on Tuesday.

“I told the girls I'm proud of the win. It wasn't flashy, and we didn't look too good,” Myrtle coach Robert Gordon said. “We've been hitting the ball really well lately, but today we just had one of those days, and I credit that to their pitcher. She's a young girl, and she's good. She kept the arc up and definitely, that's the difference today.”
Ingomar got on the board first with Lauren Koon scoring off a single by Reid Little in the opening inning. Myrtle answered in the second, placing two runners on base, tying the game off a single by Brianna Brassell and a sacrifice fly out by Emily Cook to lead 2-1.
The score remained the same thanks to Kelly Mayo's performance for the Lady Falcons. Allowing four hits over two innings, Myrtle left all of those runners on base and did not score again until the fifth when Meshay Cox hit a leadoff home run, making it 3-1.
“She's been like that the whole year, and that's her thing,” Gordon said of the junior. “She loves to play and she loves the defensive side just as much as the offensive side. She works at it, and she has a lot of good skills. Her and Jenna (Jordan) have both been playing very well for us, offensively.”
The home run is the 11th of the season for Cox, and she is a part of a tough batting order for Myrtle, one that produced six of the Lady Hawks' nine hits against Ingomar.
“They've been pretty much the backbone of our team,” Gordon said. “That's what we've relied on a lot, and that's what we've worked on is that the middle and latter part of the line up have to step up and come through with some clutch hitting, so that when we get back to the top, they can hit with runners on base. They've been scratching a lot with them up front, and our middle has been decent, we just need to get more consistent with our middle and latter part of the lineup.”
Cox led Myrtle with two hits, and Cook limited the Lady Falcons to only four hits.
Myrtle will next travel to Wheeler on Thursday while Ingomar will host Pine Grove on Friday.
