A fast start was quickly erased as New Albany dropped their first game of the season, 12-2, to Corinth on Monday.
Mallory Beaty put the Lady Bulldogs on the board first, plating Shannon Goode, who reached on a walk, with her double, and Morgan Beaty later scored off a hit by Shaneka Cullins, making it 2-0 New Albany after the first inning. The Lady Bulldogs had an opportunity to extend that lead, but Cullins was thrown out while trying to reach third on the play.
Corinth, led by a double and home run by Erin Frazier, scored 12 unanswered over the next four innings, recording 10 combined hits in the second and third innings.
With hits from Haley Christian, Katie Vandever and Elizabeth Williams, the Lady Warriors brought in their first run and later tied the game in the second off a bases loaded walk of Paige Dill. Lauren Cavender walked a total of three batters in the contest.
Frazier’s bases loaded doublelater gave Corinth the lead, and the Lady Warriors added seven more runs in the third, opening the inning with three straight hits and an RBI double by Rebekah Williams. Dill and Portia Patterson had RBI hits followed by Frazier’s three run shot, making it 11-2.
Frazier and Christian each had two hits to lead the Lady Warriors, and New Albany committed three errors in the fifth, allowing Corinth’s final run.
New Albany had five hits, led by Mallory Beaty’s double, and the Lady Bulldogs had a quick turnaround, hosting Myrtle on Tuesday.
New Albany will be back in action this weekend, taking on Eupora, Grenada and Tishomingo County in the North Pontotoc Tournament on Saturday. Game times for the Lady ‘Dawgs will be 10 a.m., 12:40 p.m. and 2:20 p.m.
