Where are They Now?- Mallory Sanford Horn

Mallory Sanford Horn would agree that she has been blessed when it comes to her job.
After graduating from New Albany in 2002, the former multi-state champion in softball and basketball continued her successful softball career at Northeast Community College before completing her undergraduate studies at Ole Miss. Since, Horn has returned home, working in the New Albany School District and couldn’t be happier.
“When I finished at Ole Miss and heard this position opened up in New Albany, I was excited and eager to let loose, not only with my teaching skills, coaching as well,” she said.
Horn did just that, working with the Lady Bulldogs’ softball program for four years, and it didn’t hurt to have someone on staff who was once All-State, All-Division and All-County in the sport, as well as a six-year recipient of the Lady ‘Dawgs’ Golden Glove Award.
With the birth of her son, Dawson, this past year, Horn opted to take a year off from coaching.  Soon, though, she found herself back at it – in a different setting.
“I took the year off to be with my child, but the position opened up with the junior high cheerleading squad, and I decided to go for it,” she said of her new role.
“I was a cheerleader in junior high, so I have a little background with it.”
This week, Horn is getting a taste of the cheerleading world, working with the girls at camp at Ole Miss, and the first-year cheerleading coach is enjoying the time and getting to know her new team.
“They’re such a great group to work with,” she said.
“Everything with them is ‘yes ma’am, no ma’am, complete respect and they want to learn, so it’s been an amazing experience so far.”
Outside of coaching, Horn also teaches at the middle school; 8th grade english, as well as 6th grade creative writing and reading, and knows that New Albany will always be her home.
“I love New Albany, love the small town feel and everything about it,” she said. “When I came  back here for my first year of teaching, everyone was so helpful and eager to help me get my foot in door. It was such an easy transition, and I hope to be here forever, if possible.”
