Lady Eagles sweep Pine Grove in softball playoffs

Remaining focused and disciplined, West Union used a pair of 12-2 wins over Pine Grove to advance to the second round of the 1A state playoffs.

Picking up the game one win on Friday, West Union continued to get the big hits, as they fought off an early 1-0 deficit. Jode McMillen brought in the first run for the Lady Eagles, scoring Bailey Bogue, who reached base earlier on a walk. A double by Danielle Taylor gave West Union the lead and a wild pitch plus a two-run single by Hannah McQuary gave the Lady Eagles the 5-1 lead after the second.

After the Lady Panthers added a run in the top of the third, West Union again scored five runs with Leah Paige Goolsby scoring two on her single and three more scoring on two separate Pine Grove errors.

Julianna Garner ended the game in the sixth, hitting a two-run triple that plated Grace Rutledge and Jesslyn Brewer, giving the Lady Eagles the series sweep.

“We’re very excited to make it through round one. Pine Grove is a great team and their coach has done a tremendous job with them,” West Union head coach Lisa Bogue said. “We’re lucky to have survived round one and made it to round two.”

Danielle Taylor led West Union with three hits, while McQuary and Brewer each had two. Bogue was most impressed with how her team stayed focused and did not allow a letdown after their big win Friday night.

“It was very important to stay focused and disciplined at the plate,” she explained. “We knew Pine Grove would come out and play hard because they’re fighting for their season. At this point, it’s loser go home and done, and they fought for it. We hit the ball well, and we had it all through the lineup. Everyone hit very well today.”

In Friday night’s win, the Lady Eagles were walked 16 times en route to the 12-2 win on the road. Garner finished the game 3-for-5 with a double and six RBI and Britney Taylor had two hits. The younger Taylor was absent from Saturday’s contest, which meant defensive changes to the Lady Eagles. Despite the loss of their starting short stop, Bogue commended her team for taking the changes with ease.

“We were worried with her out sick, and we had to rearrange,” she said. “That’s never a good thing when you have to do that, but they all handled it well, knew what they needed to do and did it well.”

Next for the Lady Eagles is a second round match-up with the Smithville-Coldwater winner. The series will start on Friday.
