New Albany golf now looks ahead to an appearance in the state championships after the boys won their district match and the girls finished second on Monday.
The duo of Peyton Dunlap and Holt Garrett each shot a 77 during the 18-hole match to lead the Bulldogs to a three-point win over Itawamba. Ryne Stanford finished with an 83, followed by Will Cherry (86) and Cody Cissom (87), as New Albany boasted an overall score of 323 while the Indians finished with 326.
Ally McDonald shot the low score of the day for Itawamba (72) and Clif Hanna shot a 70 for Pontotoc to earn medalist honors, qualifying him to compete as an individual.
Pontotoc finished with a score of 337, followed by Tishomingo County in fourth and North Pontotoc in fifth.
The Lady Bulldogs finished in second to Tupelo, falling by two, 189 for the Golden Wave and 191 for New Albany.
Summer Sanderson was the overall individual winner, shooting a 90, but since she will already compete with the team, Carlee Nanney of Itawamba earned the spot to compete as an individual, shooting a 91.
Lauren Dunlap finished with a 101 and Lenzi Sanderson a 106, contributing to New Albany’s final score.
The boys will compete for state on May 9-11 in Cleveland while the girls will play at Whisper Lakes Golf Course in Madison, Miss. next month.
