Lady Tigers add local talent to roster

Northeast Mississippi Community College women’s basketball program continued to bolster its roster with five in-district signings on the first day athletes could sign with college programs on Friday, April 8.
Northeast women’s assistant basketball coach Maurice Stafford signed five local athletes from four in-district high schools that included Kabrina Lucas of New Albany, Shunquest Howell and India Howard of Ripley, Katie Garvin of Kossuth and Krystal Jackson of New Site.
Lucas helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s (MHSAA) Class 4A State Championship during her senior season.
Lucas, a 5-6 guard, led the Lady Bulldogs in assists and steals per game averaging 3.7 assists and 2.8 steals per game while piecing together an 11.3 points per game average.
Lucas scored a career-high 25 points in the Class 4A State Championship game against Lawrence County on March 4 that sealed the Lady Bulldogs state championship71-61.
Howell and Howard helped lead the Ripley Lady Tigers to a 28-4 record and the Class 3Atitle under former Northeast Lady Tiger Katie Walker-Bates.
Howell, a 5-5 point guard, averaged 10.7 points a game and nearly four assists per game (3.9) while hitting 40-percent of her shots from beyond the three-point arc.
During her senior season, Howell also averaged 3.6 rebounds and 2.5 steals a game and had 12 points and eight rebounds in a 46-37 win over Cleveland East Side in the Class 3A North Half Tournament.
Howard, a 5-7 guard, averaged 9.4 points and 3.7 rebounds a game to go along with 301points her senior season.
Howard also averaged 2.8 assists and 2.2 steals a game for the Lady Tigers and had a season-high 19 points against Pontotoc and division foe Belmont on January 27.
Howard came on during the Division 1-3 Division Tournament with 15 points against Corinth and 18 markers against Kossuth.
Garvin, a 5-8 guard/forward, averaged 13.6 points a game for Larry Johnson’s Lady Aggies during their 19-10 season.
Garvin, who had a season-high 30 points against Booneville in a 61-35 win on November 18, led the Lady Aggies in steals per game (3.6) while also averaging 2.6 assists and 4.8 rebounds a game for Kossuth.
Garvin stayed consistent for the Lady Aggies scoring double digits in 23 of Kossuth 29 games during the season and had an eight-game streak of scoring over 12 points a game during the middle of the year.
Jackson, a 5-10 guard, saw limited action for the Lady Royals her senior season but made an impact on the roster.
During eight games her senior season, Jackson averaged 16.8 points a game, pulled down eight rebounds a game.
Jackson, who has not lost a home game since her freshman year, recorded back-to-backdouble-doubles against Tishomingo County and Mooreville during the latter portions of November.
Jackson led New Site to a 31-2 mark during her junior year and averaged 18.5 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game during her junior season at New Site.
