Northeast softball schedules annual college exposure tournament
Booneville City Park has been a hotbed of junior college softball action over the last couple ofweeks as Northeast Mississippi Community College starts to heat up the basepaths during its 2011 season.
However, on Saturday, March 19, Booneville City Park reverts to the hotbed of high school softball as Northeast and Booneville High School team up to host their annual College Exposure Tournament.
“This is a major recruiting event for us to get these kids to Booneville,” Northeast head softball coach Jody Long said. “We hope they get a chance to get on our campus and see what its about.”
Northeast’s College Exposure Tournament sees 22 teams descend on the City of Hospitality for 33 games in a one-day event at Booneville City Park.
Teams from as far away as Adamsville and Savannah, Tenn. (Hardin County), in the north and Nanih Wayia in the south along with Muscle Shoals, Ala., in the east and Southaven in the west help comprise the action-packed field.
“All of our games have the potential to be very competitive and great match ups,” Long said. “We have a ton of local talent mixed in with a few quality out of state programs.”
Action kicks off on all four fields at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 19 as Kossuth and New Albany square off on Field 1, Biggersville and Byhalia meet on Field 2, East Union and Adamsville match wits on Field 3 while Potts Camp and Belmont battle it out on Field 4 (Booneville High School’s field).
Each individual field witnesses eight games during the one-day tournament with Field 4 being the only exception as Booneville begins its third game of the day – ninth overall for Field 4 — against in-county rival Wheeler at 9 p.m. Saturday night.
Each team picks up three games in the tournament against competition it would not normally face during the regular season except with the addition of rivalrygames. New Albany and Tishomingo County are the exception to the rule, though.
New Albany has plans to play four games in the tournament while Tishomingo County opted for a pair of games against Tupelo at 10:30 a.m. and Southaven at 1:30 p.m.
While Booneville has the late game on Saturday starting at 9 p.m., Prentiss County and softball fans alike can enjoy a full day of softball for only $5.
Four schools located in Prentiss County are slated to take part in the tournament with Baldwyn facing off against Adamsville (10:30 a.m.), Potts Camp (noon) and Byhalia at 4:30 p.m.
New Site picks up Byhalia at 1:30 p.m., Biggersville at 3 p.m. and Bruce at 7:30 p.m. all on Field 3.
Wheeler and Booneville both get late starts in the day with both schools waiting until 4:30 p.m. to start their days.
Wheeler faces New Albany at 4:30 p.m., West Union at 7:30 p.m. in a rematch of the Class 1A semi-finals from 2010 before battling Booneville in the nightcap at 9 p.m.
Before taking on its in-county rival, Booneville faces Bruce at 4:30 p.m. and New Albany at 6 p.m. all on Field 4.
