If Aspriona Gilbert’s performance against East Union was uncharacteristic, she broke the slump quickly, leading the Lady Hawks in their win over Lafayette, 66-63 on Monday.
The 6’0 junior scored only nine points in Myrtle’s win against the Lady Urchins last Thursday, but followed that showing with 36 points and 22 rebounds against the state’s third ranked team.
“She had probably the worst game of her career against East Union, so she played good today,” Myrtle head coach Chris Greer said. “She even missed a couple she normally makes, but she did good.”
Lafayette built a 20-14 first quarter lead before the Lady Hawks went on a 7-0 run to go ahead 21-20 in the second, off a basket by Kianna Cox.
The Lady ‘Dores quickly regained the lead, but a three-point play by Gilbert gave Myrtle the lead for the remainder of the half, as the Lady Hawks were up 34-30 at the break.
Lafayette stormed back in the third quarter, capitalizing off of Myrtle turnovers and outscoring the Lady Hawks, 18-8, in the frame to take a 48-42 lead into the fourth.
“We didn’t play any defense, and they played good,” Greer said. “In the fourth, Kianna Cox hit a couple shots, and we got the ball to Aspriona some. We’re just not playing good right now, but we’ll take a win.”
Cox cut Lafayette’s lead to only three off her triple and made it a one-point lead, 52-51, moments later. Gilbert gave Myrtle the lead at the 2:45 mark, and connecting on all six of her free throw attempts in the frame helped Myrtle pull away.
Lafayette made it a two-point game, 64-62, but were held to only one more point as Myrtle sealed the win at the free throw line.
“It was a big win, and they’re a good team. We actually didn’t play well, I don’t think. We played good enough to win,” Greer said.
Accompanying Gilbert was Cox with 16 points. Shaquilla Isom led Lafayette with 21 points, followed by Mykira Buford with 14 and Nikki McChristen with 13 points.
Water Valley 73 Myrtle 64 (boys)
Eric Buckley’s play off the bench sparked the Blue Devils in their 73-64 win over Myrtle Monday night.
The Hawks and Water Valley traded leads in the first quarter with the Devils holding the one-point advantage. Heading into the second, Matt Dalton led Water Valley with eight points, extending their lead to five at the break.
Opening the third quarter on a 6-1 run, the Devils lead broke double digits and a three-pointer by Fred McGee put Water Valley ahead 52-39.
The Hawks went on a 5-0 run to start the point and cut the deficit to five points on several occasions, but could not stop Buckley, who had seven fourth quarter points, 25 overall.
Russ Yates led Myrtle with 19 points, followed by 16 from Robert Montgomery and 10 points from both Heriah Dodson and Keon Hampton off the bench.
Following Buckley’s 25 points was Dalton with 18 and McKendrick Bounds with 10.
Both Myrtle squads will face West Oktibbeha on Tuesday.
