Olson, Kingsley lead NA soccer over Corinth

New Albany played their first soccer matches at Kitchens’ Field, and it is only fitting that this was the setting for the Lady Bulldogs’ first win of the season, defeating Corinth 2-0 on Saturday.

Youth leads this squad, and it was Kristen Olson stepping up with New Albany’s two goals, the first set up by Martha Alef in the first half, and the second, unassisted in the second half.

“The team has been playing fairly well, but we only have five experienced players on the field, so it’s difficult,” NAHS head coach Les Huntington said. “The eighth graders are probably carrying the biggest burden on this team, and it’s gratifying to see an eighth grader score two goals against a varsity squad. Kristen played a beautiful game, and the conversion of the pass from Martha Alef was textbook. Our defense was solid, and to have a shutout was great.”

The Bulldogs also picked up a win, defeating Corinth, 3-2. The Warriors jumped to an early 1-0 lead, but the play of Moses Kingsley off the bench put the Bulldogs ahead, 2-1, after Kingsley converted twice in the first half.

“I told him at the half that two of his strides are four or five for others and he can play wherever we place the ball in front of him,” NAHS head coach Taylor Nichols said. “It definitely helps out, and I wish we could have him every game, but he definitely came through for us today.”

New Albany extended that lead off a late goal by Brian Gonzalez, and while Corinth quickly responded with their second goal, the Bulldogs held on for the win.

“That was only the third corner we had, and we’ve really worked on those this year, and so far, we’ve already scored on more corners this year than we have in the past two years,” Nichols said of Gonzalez’s goal. “It was good security, but we went back and gave up another goal about a minute later and I’m glad we had that there, otherwise it could have come back to hurt us.”

The win is New Albany’s second of the weekend, as the ‘Dawgs defeated Saltillo, 3-1 Friday night. This is also the second win in a row for NAHS after falling to Tupelo earlier in the week.
