Chris Marion, 41
Chris Marion, 41, of Byhalia, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at Magnolia Regional Healthcare-Corinth. He was a Heavy Machine Operator for Freeland and Lemm Construction in Cordova, Tenn., a member of Houston First Baptist Church in Houston and also worked for Ashley Furniture in Pontotoc.
Services were at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah, Tenn. with Dennis McGarity, Jason Bormann and Ronnie Sanders officiating. Interment was in White’s Creek Cemetery in Hardin County, Tenn. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Savannah, Tenn. was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Susan Rena Goodman Marion of Byhalia; his parents, Linda Gale Houck and her husband, Richard of Booneville and William Darrell Marion and his wife, Tommye of Red Banks; two sons, Robert Christopher Marion of Rockport, Texas and Ian Conner Marion of Byhalia; two daughters, Brittany Ladner of Jackson and Brianna Nicole Marion of Dumas; three stepbrothers, Jared Houck and his wife, Cyndi of Durham, N.C., Robert Parnell and his wife, Cindy of Bartlett, Tenn. and Ryan Parnell of Searcy, Ark.; one sister, Melodie Lynn Claxton and her husband, Tommy of Mt. Pleasant; three stepsisters, Janna Ortiz and her husband, Jose of Arlington, Tenn., Raye Ramsey and her husband, Walter of Little Rock, Ark. and Meridith Kitchen and her husband, Keith of Arkansas; grandparents, L.C. Rye and Elizabeth Rye, both of Aberdeen.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, Minnie Frank Marion and Wvillied Darrell Marion.
Phyllis Gates, 66
Phyllis Ann Nunn Gates, 66, of Etta, died Nov. 29, 2008, at her residence. She was born Oct. 29, 1942, in Louisville, Ky. She was a cashier at Wal-Mart in Pontotoc and a member of Salem United Methodist Church.
Services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at United Funeral Service Chapel with Bro. Winston Ross officiating. Interment was in McKay Cemetery in Hickory Flat. United Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her son, Norman Thompson (Penny) of Hickory Flat; her stepson, Earnie Gates (Kelli) of New Albany; her mother, Madeline Mayes Murphy of Pinedale; and a grandson, Jeremy Thompson of Hickory Flat.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elvin Hugh Gates; and her father, Lois Bruce Nunn.
Pallbearers were Scott Massengill, James Cox, Ted Hobson, James Coltharp, Gary Floyd and Eddie Horn.
Visitation was from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Bishop Willie G. Ball, 57, of New Albany, died Nov. 30, 2008, at his residence.

Edith Stone, 93
Edith Nix Stone, 93, of New Albany, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at Magnolia Place-New Albany. She was born Oct. 16, 1915 in Lauderdale County to Alonzo and Eugenia Walker Nix. She was a charter member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. She was a former clerk in the Union County Sheriff’s office. She also worked in the shoe department at Houston Dry Goods and at Little’s Drug Store. She was one of the founders and served for 14 years as volunteer at the Union County Good Samaritan Center. She was married to her husband, Freddy, for 72 years. Their love for each other was so evident that anyone in their presence was aware of how special their love was. Her faith in God was prominent every day of her life and was inspiring to many. She will be sadly missed by all who loved her. In faith we now celebrate her eternal life with God.
Services were at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Will Steinbacher and Father Jerry Daniels officiating. Interment was in Vista Memorial Park. United Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her husband; three grandchildren, Becky Story, Debbie Flynt and her husband, Gary and Catherine Rouse and her husband, Tim; six great-grandchildren, David Flynt, Miriam Story, Jake Rouse, Caitlin Flynt, Emily Story and AnnaBeth Rouse.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Paula Ferguson; two brothers, Steve Nobles and Bob Nobles.
Pallbearers were Tom Wiseman, Tim Rouse, David Flynt, Donnie Rossetti, Leonard Bowen and Ken Corpstein.
Visitation was from 4 until 6:30 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home, followed immediately by a Rosary service.

Cato, Jr., 81
Clifford L. “Pete” Cato, Jr., 81, of Blue Springs, died Nov. 29, 2008, at his residence. He was a truck driver, a school bus driver, a factory worker, a farmer, and retired from Super Sagless.
Services were at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at Tutor Memorial Chapel with Bro. Marvin Cox and Bro. Donald Windham officiating. Interment was in Glenfield Memorial Cemetery. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home of Pontotoc was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his first wife, Glenda Dewanda Cato; two daughters, Ginger Price (Mike) and Lanora Spence, both of Blue Springs; four sons, Clifford Cato, III (Mary) and Gregory Cato (Regina), both of Blue Springs, Andrew Cato (Angela) of Ecru and Michael Cato of New Albany; nine grandsons; seven granddaughters; four great-grandsons; and four great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Donald Cato.
Pallbearers were Shane Cato, B.J. Shelton, Jason Sanders, Petey Cato, Drew Cato and Mike Price.
Visitation was from noon until service time Sunday at the funeral home.
Merlene Ferrell, 74
Mable Merlene Rogers Ferrell, 74, of Holly Springs, died Nov. 28, 2008, at her residence. She was born May 17, 1934, in Lafayette County to the late Hondle Lamar Rogers and Julia Myrtle Fuller Rogers. She was a retired grocery store owner and a member of the Philadelphia Baptist Church.
Services were at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at the United Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Kenny Adair officiating. Interment was in Philadelphia Cemetery. United Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include one daughter, Robyne Earnest (David) of Collierville, Tenn.; one son, Roger Ferrell (Deborah) of Cordova, Tenn.; three sisters, Donnie Evelyn Garrison of Southaven, Mildred Churchill and Rebecca Jenkins, both of New Albany; one brother, Donald Rogers of Etta; three grandchildren, Kevin Ferrell, Kelley Reeves and Ariel Earl Earnest; and two great-grandchildren, Heaven Ruiz and Nathan Ferrell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James R. Ferrell; two sisters; and one brother.
Her nephews served as pallbearers.

Smithey, Jr., 61
Robert Smithey, Jr., 61, of New Albany, died Nov. 27, 2008, at his residence. He was born April 18, 1947, in New Albany to Robert and Lela Mae Pickens Smithey.
Services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at Serenity Funeral Chapel in New Albany with Sharon Wommack Will officiating. Interment was in Bell Cemetery. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his son, Robert Smithey (Hollie) of New; two daughters, Nickie Myles and Robin Hernandez, both of Lake Providence, La.; ten grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ray Adair; and two sisters, Vertia Mae Rakestraw and Shorty Bell.
His friends served as pallbearers.
Visitation was held from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Lenox McMillen, 98
Lenox Ralph McMillen, 98, of New Albany, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at the Magnolia Place Personal Care Home in New Albany. He was born Dec. 15, 1909, in Union County to William R. and Bessie Farmer McMillen. A lifelong resident of Union County, he was a retired farmer and a member of Fredonia Baptist Church.
Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at Mortimer Funeral Home in Ecru with Dr. Chris Aldridge officiating. Interment was in Ingomar Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 76 years, Eleanor Sutherland McMillen of New Albany; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Holland, Lambert and Pete McMillen; and a sister, Pauline M. Sutherland.
Visitation was from 10 a.m. to service time Saturday.
Randy W. Abbott, 45
Randy W. Abbott, 45, of Guntown, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo after a brief illness. He was a Baptist and a mechanic for Newby Motors. He enjoyed fishing and camping.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at Waters Funeral Home with Bro. Bob Cossey officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery. Waters Funeral Home of Baldwyn is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Melissa Carter Abbott of Guntown; his children, William Chase Abbott, Brandon Lee Abbott and Summer Lynn Abbott, all of the home; his stepson, Zachary Carter of Guntown; his parents, William and Betty Abbott of Baldwyn; his sisters, Brenda Cox (Randy) of Virginia, Tina Parker (Bobby) of Saltillo, Tammy Abbott of Baldwyn and Rosa Malone (Jerry) of New Albany; his brothers, Donnie Abbott of Baldwyn, William Abbott (Tammy) of Guntown and Bobby Abbott (Casey) of Baldwyn; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Malone, Corey Abbott, Shane Hester, Joey Bridges, Todd Davis and Charles Mullen.
Honorary pallbearers will be his brothers and employees of Newby Motors.

Hazel Adderholt, 84
Hazel Virginia Adderholt, 84, of Blue Springs, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at Graceland Care Center in New Albany after a long illness. A Union County native, she was born April 6, 1924, to George and Zelma Floyd Jones. She shared ownership of Adderholt’s Restaurant and Catering in Tupelo for many years. A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, she loved her family and was a great supporter and joy to all who loved her.
Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at the Saltillo Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Bro. Jeff Lawrence officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Steve Adderholt of Blue Springs and Sammy Adderholt (Peggy) of Tupelo; one daughter, Jane Jernigan Criddle (Troy) of Saltillo; three sisters, Christine Roberts (J.D.) of Blue Springs, Margie Booth (Jerry) of Endville and Winnie Banker (Jim) of Saltillo; one brother, Bobby Jones of Sherman; three granddaughters, Linda Wyatt (Jason) of Madison, Amy Shankle (Mike) of Tupelo and Melissa Adderholt of Pensacola, Fla.; two grandsons, Lon Jernigan (Brooke) of Saltillo and Michael Adderholt of Tupelo; three great-granddaughters, Maegin, Jaelin and Katelyn Wyatt of Madison; two great-grandsons, Jonathan Best of Tupelo and Avery Jernigan of Saltillo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C.E. “Buddy” Adderholt, on Aug. 6, 1977.
Visitation was from noon until service time Tuesday at the Saltillo funeral home.
